Why you should link genomics with proteomics to accelerate the search for effective drug targets.

In drug discovery programs where targets correlated to disease causality is a prerequisite a proteogenomics approach is effective. The objective is to link gene variants to protein expression levels. These types of associations are called protein Quantative Trait Loci (pQTLs). If both the genetic variant and protein expression level can be robustly associated with a phenotypic outcome using Mendelian Randomization (MR), this provides the best possible evidence that the protein is causally involved in the disease being studied.
